The Senate of Pennsylvania has passed unanimously a concurrent resolution hailing the American Jewish Tercentenary, whose celebration officially ended last month. The resolution still awaits action in the House.
The resolution, introduced by Sen. William J. Lane, noted Jewish contributions to the well-being and security of the United States from its earliest days and stressed the devotion of American Jewry to “religious freedom, civic righteousness and philanthropy.” The resolution also reaffirmed the sentiment of George Washington that “the liberality of sentiment toward each other which marks every political and religious denomination of men in this country, stands unparalleled in the history of nations,” and his famous words that “the Government of the United States gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”
