In view of the fact that reports continue to arrive from the provincial parts of the country that the local authorities there are collecting signatures from alien residents pledging themselves not to take up any employment in Lithuania next year, the J.T.A. representative here has had an interview with M. Novakas, head of the Citizens Protection Department of the Ministry of the Interior, who has authorised him to state that he will issue an order instructing the police that they must not demand such undertakings.
Alien residents coming from occupied districts of Lithuania (Vilna district, etc.) will be recognised as Lithuanian citizens, M. Novakas further declared, and in addition Staatenlose who hold Nansen passports will not be deprived of the right to work.
