Shimon Peres, the leader of Israel’s Labor Party, told Labor Zionist Alliance leaders from the U.S. and Canada that while there are political “skirmishes” in the Labor. Party, they are not serious but rather a sign that Labor will win future elections to head the Israel government. The Labor Party is a “democratic organization,” he added. He indicated that when the Israeli electorate compares the nearly 30-year record of Labor as compared with the present Likud government, the voters will return Labor to power.
Peres also asserted that the Labor Party will refuse to negotiate with the Palestine Liberation Organization which he charged goes on with terror and stands by their covenant to destroy Israel.
Peres also said that Israel is conducting serious discussions within the Socialist International to resist the advances of the PLO. When compared to European governments, he pointed out, the Socialist International is closer to Israel’s position regarding the PLO than are the European governments. Peres pointed out that the Socialist International had rebuffed efforts to seat the PLO as observers to a recent Socialist International meeting.
