Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said Tuesday that if he were to lead the next government, he would support the Jordan River as Israel’s eastern security border.
Talking to group of visiting American journalists, Peres was not specific in describing a political border, nor his plans for evacuating portions of the administered territories.
But he did say that any evacuated territory would be demilitarized, and that the security border would include early warning stations set up along the Jordan River to prevent a surprise attack against Israel.
Labor Party politicians have traditionally distinguished between security borders and political borders.
Peres’ position appears to be that while Israel should be prepared to relinquish sovereignty over parts of the West Bank, the Israel Defense Force would retain control over all territory up to the Jordan River.
