Defense Minister Shimon Peres complained today to the United Nations Observer Force that Soviet helicopters are violating Israeli air space in the Gulf of Suez region. According to Peres, the helicopters, based on the Soviet aircraft carrier “Leningrad,” had several times crossed the cease-fire line into Israeli airspace. The helicopters are engaged in clearing mines from the Gulf of Suez. This is the first time that Soviet planes have crossed into Israeli airspace. Meanwhile, Peres was meeting today with Gen. Bengt Liljestrand of Sweden, UNDOF commander, and Lt. Col. David Richards of the United States, chief of operations, to discuss the working arrangements for UNDOF in the buffer zones.
