Israeli Premier Shimon Peres will visit Rumania, the only eastern bloc country that maintains relations with the Jewish State, in two weeks, according to Rumanian Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen.
Rosen revealed the imminent visit by Peres this afternoon at a question and answer session via television hook up with the Israeli leader in Jerusalem. Rosen is here participating in the three-day meeting of the Governing Board of the World Jewish Congress.
Peres, who addressed the conclave for some 15 minutes before taking about 10 questions from delegates at the WJC meeting, also credited President Nicolae Ceausescu for his role in helping to bring Egypt and Israel together toward a peace agreement. Peres said he “appreciated” that Rumania is “the only East European country that maintains openly a relationship with Israel.”
Ceausescu invited Peres to visit Bucharest last month, but the Israeli Premier replied at the time that although he wanted to make the trip, Israel’s economic crisis prevented his leaving Israel.
