Peretz Naphtali, former member of Israel’s Cabinet, a famous economist and head of the German Social Democratic party’s economic planning department until the advent of the Hitler regime, died here today after a prolonged illness. He was 73.
Mr. Naphtali came to Palestine in 1933. He was elected to the Tel Aviv Municipal Council in 1937; was a member of the executive committee of Histadrut, the Israel Federation of Labor; served as Minister of Agriculture from 1952 to 1955; and became Minister without Portfolio in 1955.
Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion eulogized Mr. Naphtali at the Government’s weekly Cabinet meeting today. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, and Mr. Naphtali’s remains will be interred in the settlement of Alumot, on the shores of Lake Tiberias.
