Congressman Perlman declared that the chances for securing favorable action on his relative quota exemption relief bill during this session are slight, after the action of the House Immigration Committee in tabling his bill.
The only remaining hope is the possibility of Senator Wadsworth’s pushing through his companion bill in the Senate. Senator Wadsworth has not yet been able to secure action by the Senate but stated that he intends bringing his bill up before adjournment, which is now expected by July 1st.
Congressman Perlman declared that if the Senate acts favorably, the House Immigration Committee will feel compelled to report the bill, despite its present adverse attitude. He admitted however that the Committee could refuse to act at this late period of the session. Congressman Perlman also conceded that the chances of favorable action by the Senate are very slight.
The House Committee will act today on the Sabath bill providing for the admission of twenty-two thousand instead of thirty-five thousand additional relatives, called for by the Perlman bill. It is improbable that the Committee will accept the Sabath bill after rejecting the Perlman measure. Congressman Perlman said there is a chance of the House Committee’s passing a restricted relief resolution for the admission of a few thousand additional relatives, and exempting the husbands of women who are United States citizens.
