Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress, told President Juan Velasco Alvarado yesterday that Peru’s accession to the United Nations Security Council on Jan. 1 would allow the country to play an Important role In promoting a Middle East peace. Lt, Gen. Velasco was host to Dr, Goldmann; Dr. Gerhart Riegner, secretary general of the WJC; Dr. Isaac Goldenberg, president of the Latin American Jewish Congress; and Jose Ludmir, president of the Lima Jewish community. Belasco said he hoped Peru could help bring a Mideast peace, considering what he called its excellent relations with Israel.
Dr. Goldmann thanked Velasco for the generous hospitality offered by the government of Peru, an officially Catholic nation, to the sixth conference of Latin American Jewish communities. Velasco voiced satisfaction that the conference takes place in Lima, confirming the excellent relations with the Jewish community and serving as a positive factor in the country’s development.
