After a heated debate, Parliament today rejected by a vote of 55 to 24 a bill urging registration and control of all Jewish residents as a “precautionary measure” against war profiteering in commodities. The debate was the first in which Jews were the issue.

Many deputies warmly defended the Jews, while one Jewish deputy, H. Cohen, who has been inactive in Jewish circles, asserted in a spirited speech that he was a greater Peruvian patriot and had done more for his country than the author of the anti-Semitic measure.

It was pointed out that Jews played virtually no role in the Peruvian food industry, which is controlled by Italians, Japanese and Chinese.
