The entire population of this oldest Jewish colony in Palestine, newly elevated to municipal status, stopped work today and marched to the cemetery where impressive memorial services were held for the victims of the 1929 Arab massacres.
High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope participated in the ceremonies, at the same time officially inaugurating the municipality. Following the inaugural exercises, Sir Arthur and his party were conducted on a tour of the new all-Jewish city’s streets. The city has a population of more than 15,000.
