Petach Tikvah is to receive the status of a municipality, it was learned here today. The special government commission appointed to study the status of Petach Tikvah will urge this in its report, it was disclosed.
Petach Tikvah is the largest and one of the oldest Jewish colonies in Palestine. It was organized in 1878 with the financial aid of Baron de Rothschild.
The colony, rich in plantations, boasts of every convenience, such as telephone, telegraph,, hotels, libraries, theatres and a regular transit system connecting the colony with Tel Aviv and Jaffa. It has a population of close to 15,000.
Petach Tikvah is popularly referred to as “the mother of Judea’s colonies.” It has repeatedly demanded to be recognized as a municipality for the past few years. Only a few months ago the Palestine government appointed a special commission to determine its status.
