A petition asking the government to ban the entry of immigrants was today submitted to the Canadian parliament in Ottawa. It carries 100,000 signatures and was sponsored by the St. Jean Baptiste Society in Quebec to offset a previous effort by the National Committee on Refugees which asked for a relaxation of the Canadian immigration laws in favor of the persecuted peoples of Europe.
The Montreal city council today shelved two anti-immigration resolutions which were placed on the agenda by the St. Jean Baptist Society and La ligue Nationae after a motion proposed by a Jewish Councillor, William Victor was adopted by a majority vote. During the debate many councillors spoke at length upon the motion and the sentiment was against permitting mass immigration after the war.
