Professor Leo Pfeffer, chairman of the department of Political Science at Long Island University and special counsel to the American Jewish Congress, told a hearing of the Maryland Constitutional Convention on Tuesday that state’s constitution should contain a specific prohibition against the spending of public funds for private and parochial schools.
He warned that if this prohibition were not included, “the public officials responsible for the division of such funds will be subjected to increasing pressure from religious groups, and these will exert every effort to elect to those offices members of their faith on whom they can rely for generous treatment. We may then have in this country a Catholic Party, a Jewish Party and an Episcopalian Party.”
