A quota of $600,000 for the Allied Jewish Campaign has been accepted by the Jewry of Philadelphia and vicinity at a conference of leading members of the community held at the home of Judge Horace Stern. It was agreed that the campaign should be launched at the end of May or early in June. A committee, consisting of Dr. Cyrus Adler, chairman; Judge William M. Lewis, Morris Wolf and Albert H. Lieberman, was appointed to name a chairman for the campaign.
Speaking informally, Dr. Adler reviewed the plight of Jewry the world over and stressed the economic and cultural conditions of the Jews in Poland, Roumania, and other East European countries. Emphasizing the responsibility resting upon American Jewry, Dr Adler said: “I came back from London with much less gloom than I went to it.” He cautioned against any delay and expressed confidence in the outcome of the campaign.
Judge Lewis, who is one of the cochairmen of the national campaign, told of the campaign’s progress in other parts of the country and urged the Philadelphia Jewish community to approach its task at once and set an example for the rest of the country.
