The International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations said yesterday that 51 of its 52 affiliates have agreed to participate in a 24-hour “cessation of operations” if the United Nations Security Council does not take strong measures within the next two weeks to “make hijacking a punishable offense in all nations.”
Capt. Charles Jackson, executive secretary of IFALPA, said the measures should include sanctions against any country involved in an aerial hijacking which does not “insure the immediate return of all passengers, crew and aircraft and the punishment of the hijackers.” Syria is still detaining two of six Israeli passengers aboard a TWA airliner that was hijacked to Damascus by Arab commandos Aug. 29.
Capt. Jackson said “if no action is taken within two weeks in the Security Council, then IFALPA will feel free to call a 24-hour strike and take any further action necessary to impress upon the public the urgency of the increasingly perilous hijacking situation.”
