Louis Pincus, Jewish Agency chairman, stated in his Rosh Hashanah message that Israel continues to be hemmed in by expanding Soviet imperialism and aggressive moves by the Arab world. He hailed the inroads Zionist ideas had made in Jewish circles this past year and saluted the new and potent partnership between the Jewish communities and fundraising agencies throughout the world. “In conveying my greetings to world Jewry,” Pincus stated. “I with the people of Israel wish the Jews in Russia and in the Arab countries peace and strength, fortitude and deliverance.” He also expressed the hope for a year of prosperity to the Jews in the diaspora and for enhanced aliya. The Chief Rabbis of the Sephardic and Ashkenazic communities warned in their messages that current trends of behavior are in conflict with traditional teachings and called for a return to the Torah.
