The United Jewish Federation here opened its 1965 campaign with a dinner at which pre-campaign gifts of more than $1,000, 000 were announced by William Stark, chairman of the drive.
This is the first time in the Federation’s 10-year history that pre-campgaign contributions in excess of $1, 000,000 were reported. The goal this year is $1, 777,140, The drive for 36 beneficiary agencies in Pittsburgh, the United States and overseas will end May 13, Mr. Stark noted that in recent years the annual campaigns have ended with totals slightly in excess of $1,500, 000. He said the record pre-campaign contributions indicated the 1965 goal would be reached.
The UJF board elected Alvin Rogal as president, succeeding Lester A. Hamburg, who has completed three years as president.
