The second gift of $150,000 within five years, to the Pittsburgh Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. by Edgar J. Kaufman, president of Kaufman’s department store, and his mother, Mrs. Betty W. Kaufman, was announced here today. One hundred thousand dollars of the new gift will be applied to reducing the mortgage indebtedness of the institution, and $50,000 will be used to liquidate the entire operating deficit of the Association accumulated since the opening of the building in May, 1926.
In 1924 Edgar Kaufman and Mrs. Betty Kaufman gave $150,000 towards the erection of the Morris Kaufman. Memorial Auditorium in the new Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. building. Mr. Kaufman has long been interested in the work of the “Y,” and since his first large gift in 1921, he and his mother have given it approximately $350,000.
