A plaque to mark the 200th anniversary of Jewish settlement in Canada was unveiled here today. The plaque commemorates the life of Ezekiel Hart who was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in 1807 and 1808.
The Province of Quebec was represented at the ceremony by J. Paul Beaulieu, Minister of Trade and Commerce. Others who took part in the ceremony were Samuel Bronfman, president of the Canadian Jewish Congress; Levy M. Becker, chairman of the National Bicentenary of Canadian Jewry, Mayor Laurent Paradis of Three Rivers and descendants of the Hart family, which settled in Three Rivers in 1759.
Another aspect of the observance is a unique program of education in Canadian Jewish history. A number of stores in Montreal have placed large display windows at the disposal of the Bicentenary Committee which is arranging large-scale displays of Canadian Jewish historical events for showing during November. In a typical display, a store window will be devoted to Canadian Jewish literature, another to the Hart family and another to Canadian war heroes of Jewish origin.
