The first national convention of the Federation of Lithuanian Jews of America will be held in New York City on November 17 and 18, at Mecca Temple, according to a call issued by the provisional committee of the Federation. The aim of the convention is to establish the Federation on a permanent basis.
The Federation plans to give cultural and economic aid to the Jewish population of Lithuania, which numbers 200,000.
The committee which called the conference is headed by Henry Hurwitz, editor of “The Menorah Journal,” chairman; Bernard G. Richards, vice-chairman; Edward M. Chase, who recently established a $100,000 fund for Jewish students in Lithuania, treasurer, and Dr. Mordecai Katz, secretary. Others on the committee are Israel Matz, Judge William M. Lewis of Philadelphia, Prof. M. M. Kaplan, Prof. L. L. Silverman of Dartmouth College, and Dr. Louis I. Dublin.
Dr. Zemach Feldstein, director of the Kovno Hebrew Gymnasium, and Rubin Rubinstein, editor of “The Yiddishe Stimme,” only Yiddish daily in Lithuania, are expected to arrive in New York to present reports to the convention.
