An original suggestion for saving many Jews from starvation in Soviet Russia, particularly during Passover, is made by the famous Hebrew poet, Bialik, in the Palestine press. He appeals to the Anglo-Palestine Bank, which is affiliated with the Jewish Colonial Trust,.to forego the commission which it usually charges to people in Palestine remitting money to relatives in Russia.
According to Bialik, the commission charged is really prohibitive for Palestinians able to send only small sums. It thus prevents them from sending regularly such sums as would enable their relatives in Russia to obtain from the Soviet cooperative stores small quantities of flour sufficient to keep body and soul together. He further points out that the Bank charges as much as 50 cents for transmitting the small sum of $1.
In his appeal, Bialik reminds the Anglo-Palestine Bank that it was actually created by funds collected from Jews in Russia before the Revolution. He adds that there are probably still in Russia many Jews who possess shares in the Trust which made possible the establishment of the Anglo-Palestine Bank. He expresses the belief that the Palestinian banks were to ch### no commission, then thousands Jews in Palestine would send to their friends in Russia small sums sufficient to keep them alive.
