Justice Meier Steinbrink this week-end opposed a report of the Joint Placement Commission of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations on a standardized procedure for placing rabbis. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Assembly of delegates of the New York Federation of the U.A.H.C., Justice Steinbrink said that the plan would impinge on the autonomy and independence of the congregations.
Rabbi Roland Gittelsohn, chairman of the Joint Placement Commission, who presented the plan to the conference, called it “a representative and democratic body made up in equal part of rabbinical and lay leadership, intended to bring order into a situation which lacks both.”
Frederick F. Greenman, president of the Federation, told the 100 representatives of the 54 Reform temples affiliated with the body, that he expected in the “not too distant future” to see 100 Reform congregations in New York. He called for a vigorous campaign to organize new Reform synagogues, particularly in new housing developments.
