The project of establishing a Moslem University in Jerusalem was adopted by the Moslem Conference this afternoon, and a special committee has been appointed to draw up a complete plan.
The Conference has also decided to establish Young Men’s Moslem Associations, on the same lines as the Young Men’s Christian Associations and the Young Men’s Hebrew Associations, in all Moslem countries and in all countries where Moslems reside.
Messages of greeting have been received by the Conference to-day from King Ibn Saud, Sultan of the Nejd and King of the Hedjaz, and from King Feisal of Iraq.
TO COUNTERBALANCE HEBREW UNIVERSITY
The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, the “Near East and Incia” wrote on the subject of the Conference last month, is said to have stated that the main object of the Conference would be to discuss the protection of Muslim buildings and also the proposal to establish a Moslem University in Palestine. The latter idea with which Mr. Shaukat Ali, the Indian Mussulman, has prominently associated himself, it went on, is stated to have caused certain misgivings at Al Azhar University in Cairo, as well it might.
If the motive of building such a University, it proceeded, were merely to counterbalance the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus – of which it can at any rate be said that, under its present direction, it has the right, comprehensive ideals of a University for serious students of whatsover creed – it would fall far short of the ideal.
