A long-range program to strengthen traditional Jewish life in Western Europe was proposed today by the preparatory Central Committee of the Conference of European Rabbis.
The committee, under the chairmanship of Chief Rabbi A. Schuster of Amsterdam, recommended to Rabbi Israel Brodie, Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth, that he convene another meeting of the Conference of European Rabbis in England in the Fall or Winter. The proposed conference would deal with the problems of Judaism in the modern world.
Another recommendation was to implement practical measures to facilitate traditional observances, particularly among isolated Jewish communities and those which suffered during the Nazi era. The committee also urged establishment of a Consultative Commission on Jewish Law, made up of leading rabbinic scholars in Europe, to deal with “urgent religious questions.”
The committee recommended the appointment of a special committee to review the spiritual and cultural needs of European Jewry and to advise on the creation of new institutions and extensions of existing ones to meet such needs.
