The Reconstruction Foundation of the Jewish Colonization Association and the Joint Distribution Committee will not terminate its activities at the end of 1928 as had been planned, but will continue until the following year, Leonard Cohen, vice-president of the Jewish Colonization Association, stated at the meeting of the Anglo-Jewish Association held here yesterday.
Leonard Montefiore submitted a report on the activities of the Ica, in which he stated that the harvest in Argentine was not above the average this season. Many families who arrived a short time ago without resources have succeeded in gaining considerable capital. The success or failure of the Jewish colonists in Brazil depends upon the work done before the arrival of the colonists in the country. It is useless to send colonists there except in the early summer.
Regarding the recent anti-government outbreaks, troops have been withdrawn from the Ica colonies. The Joint Foreign Committee approached Austen Chamberlain, Foreign Secretary, who instructed the British ambassador to intervene with the government to replace the troops in the colonies.
By the end of 1927 the loan kassas in Russia will number 170. This is a satisfactory feature of the work. The Jewish Colonization Association now grants 8 per cent, whereas in 1924 it extended 20 per cent of the assets. Agriculture is going forward slowly. There has also been an extension in cheese making and vine growing.
