Plans for the construction of one of the largest hospitals in Israel to be located at Rehovoth and named for the late Deputy Prime Minister Eliezer Kaplan were announced here today by Mordecai Bonen, special representative to the United States of the Kupat Holim, the Histadrut medical organization. Mr. Bonen estimated the cost of the “Eliezer Kaplan Memorial Hospital” at $3,000,000.
Mr. Bonen pointed out that the 300-bed hospital will help greatly to alleviate the current hospital bed shortage in Israel. He said that the Kupat Holim standard — “because of necessity” — is one bed per 1,000 population, although the standard for Israel is 2.5 beds per 1,000 and the world standard is 5 beds per 1,000. This low standard, he said, is due to the lack of money and materials.
