Officials at the headquarters of the International Red Cross, at Geneva, have given assurances that they would undertake the repair of Jewish cemeteries in Germany, destroyed by the Nazis, if the West German Government would meet the costs, it was announced here today by Rabbi M. J. Rubin, president of the American section of the World Center of European Rabbis.
Rabbi Rubin said he has also received a letter from Dr. M. Hirsch, chairman of the Restitution Committee of the Bundestag, lower house of the West German Parliament, agreeing that funds for the repair of the cemeteries desecrated by the Nazis should be provided by the West German Government. Rabbi Rubin pointed out, however, that, when and if the German Government votes such funds, that special budget will cover only the cemeteries despoiled by the Nazis. There are many other neglected Jewish cemeteries in Europe, he said, that badly need repair, and moneys for this work will have to be supplied by synagogues and other Jewish organizations. Appeals for such funds, said Rabbi Rubin, will be made in synagogues during the High Holy Days.
