Pledges to the 1949 drive of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York have passed the $10,000,000 mark, it was announced here last night at a dinner honoring Mrs. David M. Levy, executive chairman of the Women’s Division of the Hew York U.J.A. It was also revealed that contributions already turned over to the organization totalled $5,665,000, including $550,000 by members of the Rosenwald family and $500,000 by Joseph and Abraham Mazer.
Featured speakers at the testimonial dinner were Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett and former Gov. Herbert H. Lehman, who pre-sided. Sharett and Lehman spoke chiefly of the immigration movement of Jewish refugees to Israel, which the latter described as “Operation Homecoming”–the third phase of the U.J.A. ‘s work in behalf of Jews in overseas areas, Mrs. Roosevelt presented Drs. Levy with a testimonial book designed to hold mementoes of her work and travels in behalf of the U.J.A. over the past decade.
