A survey of the present situation of the Jews in Yemen, published in the press here today, reveals that since April, 1943 about 3700 Jews from the interior of Yemen arrived in Aden. Of them, about 1300 already have been brought to Palestine on certificates, 500 had to be repatriated to the interior of Yemen because they were found ineligible for Palestine certificates, several hundred have been absorbed in the Aden Jewish Community and 1600 were quarantined by the Aden Government after the representative of the Jewish Agency in Aden, Mr. Samuel Hassim, died of typhus.
“The 3 years of famine and typhus and other illnesses, have left their mark on most of the refugees,” the report says. “With the large influx of refugees to Aden beginning about June 1943, the need arose for shelter and relief for the refugees. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee answered the appeal, and up to now has appropriated about $25,000 for relief and shelter. In addition, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee appropriated nearly $80,000 for transportation from Aden to Palestine of those refugees who were given certificates.”
