Poets Yehuda Amihai and Amir Gilboa are this year’s recipients of the Israel Prize for poetry, it was announced by the Education and Culture Ministry. The awards will be presented on Independence Day, April 26. Amihai’s poetry was cited for revolutionizing lyrical Hebrew by combining lyrical and day-to-day language to express the world of a disillusioned generation. He was born in Germany in 1925 and immigrated to Palestine in 1936. Gilboa’s poetry was cited for its originality, combining a distinctive personal style with elements of Jewish culture to express the joys and pains of his generation. He was born in the Ukraine in 1919 and immigrated to Palestine in 1937.
