American Jewish war veterans are symbols of Jewish contributions to American life, declared Rabbi Louis I. Newman of Congregation Rodeph Sholom in an address yesterday before the Sidney Rosenberg Post of the American Legion, at the Unity Club, Brooklyn.
“It is a commentary upon the crisis in which we live,” Rabbi Newman said, “that the war record of Jews should be held so important. The men who wear the uniforms of the republic are public officials, professional men, business and communal leaders, who prefer to enhance the life of America through peaceful and civilian activities.
“But the canons of judgment which Hitlerism has imposed not only upon Germany, but upon other nations, have made it essential that Jews indicate that they have always been ready, if need be, to offer up their lives on the battlefield for their country.”
