Poland has a new chief rabbi. The Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Poland appointed Michael Schudrich to the top rabbinical posting late last week. Schudrich, who was born in New York and has four Polish grandparents, assumes a role that hasn’t been occupied since the 1999 resignation of Rabbi Menachem Joskowicz, who held the title of Chief Rabbi since the fall of Communism. Piotr Kadlcik, the acting president of the union, told JTA that the group had been thinking of appointing a chief rabbi for some time. “We felt all our communities needed proper rabbinic supervision,” he said.
