Poland said it wanted to help end the controversy prompted by the appearance of some 50 crosses outside the site of the Auschwitz death camp. The government said in a statement that the controversy was harming Poland’s image and straining a “well-developing Polish-Jewish dialogue.” Israel called on Poland to remove the crosses, erected last month by a Catholic workers group as part of a campaign to maintain Christian symbols at the site.
