Poland’s president criticized the ongoing campaign to erect crosses near the site of the Auschwitz death camp. “This is a political activity, which is unacceptable both for us and for our Polish partners,” said Alexander Kwasniewski. Meanwhile, a Vatican spokesman said it was unlikely the pope would speak out on the issue, and Polish bishops have proposed that all but one of the crosses would be removed on Sept. 14.
