Poland’s prime minister defended the placing of crosses at the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp. In a letter to United States Holocaust Memorial Museum director Miles Lerman, Jerzy Buzek asserted the right “to use symbols appropriate to the religious creed” of victims of the Nazis. Lerman and other Jewish officials have called for the removal of some 90 crosses placed on the site by Catholic fringe groups during the past three weeks.
