Polish Government circles reported today that Jews had been included in the local community councils, called “Opieka committees,” in Nazi-occupied Poland at the insistence of the Polish population.
The proportion of one Jew to five Poles was recognized by the Nazis after long argument. The Opieka committees will exist in every town and city and will coordinate such activities as relief and reconstruction.
Polish leaders here emphasized the inclusion of Jews in the committees as the best evidence that Poles were not heeding anti-Semitic propaganda spread by the Nazis. On the other hand, it was reported from Paris that the Falanga, Polish Fascist and anti-Semitic youth group, had placed itself at the disposal of the Nazi authorities in Warsaw and were beating Jews found on the city’s principal streets.
