The Mayor of Brussels today disavowed the action of police in the borough of St. Josse who clashed Saturday with Jewish demonstrators and arrested David Susskind, president of the Coordinating Committee of Jewish Organizations in Belgium. According to eye-witness reports, police charged the demonstrators without provocation, shouting, “dirty Jew” and “Get the hell out of here to Israel.”
The demonstrators were members of Jewish youth organizations protesting the Soviet treatment of Jews. One girl reportedly suffered a broken leg in the clash. The Mayor denounced the police action and said he had nothing to do with it. The Coordinating Committee compared the action “to Russia’s methods which we oppose.”
