Police tonight assigned special guards to a number of outstanding Rumanian personalities, including former Premier Jorga, who received death threats purported to have been sent by the anti-Semitic Iron Guard.
The Iron Guard issued a statement denying having sent the threats, but official circles discounted the denial, pointing to a book, “Our Legionnaires,” just published by M. Codreanu, head of the Iron Guard, revealing plans to commit a number of assassinations.
In the book, Mr. Codreanu recalled his old plan of killing outstanding rabbis and Jewish leaders, including William Filderman, president of the Union of Rumanian Jews. But he indicated that he would first like to settle accounts with Christians not considered patriotic.
“If I had only one bullet in my gun,” he declared, “and I had to choose between shooting a Jew and a Christian who is a traitor to the Nationalist cause, I would not hesitate a second to kill the last named.”
