Investigation into the causes of the anti-Jewish outbreak yesterday in the Belle Ville quarter was started by the police here.
Strong police patrols are stationed in the Belle Ville district. The Cafe Sadoul which is usually crowded with Jewish patrons was empty today.
The trouble started when a revolver shot was heard and one person was observed running from the Cafe Sadoul. A crowd pursued him and he was finally arrested by two police. He identified himself as M. Yankelewitch, an old clothes dealer. He declared that he did not fire the shot, but that he ran out of the cafe because he was frightened. Certain elements in the crowd started to cry out that a Jew had fired at a Frenchman and they then began attacking the Jewish restaurants. The small police force stationed in the district was unable to cope with the situation. Finally, however, two leaders of the mob were arrested by the police. They were identified as members of a hooligan band which is under the leadership of the notorious bandit, “Francis of Fist Vengeance.”
