Police officials reported today that an explosion that caused extensive damage to a synagogue here Sunday was deliberately set. Detective Captain Douglas Palm said that the Temple Sholom bombing involved dynamite. Windows of the synagogue were blown out and damage was sustained by nearby homes. There were no injuries although a confirmation class of several children had left the synagogue only 10 minutes before the bombing. Two synagogue officials escaped injury inside the building. The FEI has joined state and local police in an investigation. Detective Captain Palm said, “We have a lot of ideas, but nothing conclusive. At this point, we don’t know what motivated it.” Police said that another synagogue near Oheb Sholom was recently defaced with a swastika.
