A squadron consisting of 19 British policemen and 12 Palestine policemen was sent today to remove the Arab squatters from the Wadi Hawareth lands of the Jewish National Fund, whose title and ownership was approved last June by the land court at Tulkarem. Despite the court’s decision and notwithstanding the fact that the court had dismissed the appeal of the Arab squatters and that the Jewish National Fund had compensated them, the Arabs have refused to vacate the land which consists of about 45,000 dunams bought with a $1,000,000 fund raised by Canadian Zionists.
When the purchase was made, most of the Arab tenants had already evacuated but a number of squatters remained. The Jewish National Fund obtained a court order for their removal but the government interposed objections. Rather than antagonize the Arabs the Fund let the matter rest until the land court at Tulkarem ruled that the government was entitled to sell the Wadi Hawareth lands to the Fund. It was expected that this ruling would end the difficulty and enable the Fund to take immediate possession.
