A horrible eye-witness account of how Jews in the Warsaw ghetto are dying in the street of starvation was brought here by a Polish doctor who succeeded in escaping from Nazi-occupied Poland to England.
Published in today’s News Chronicle, one of London’s leading newspapers, the story reveals that death from hunger has become a common occurrence among the Jews in the ghetto. “I saw with my own eyes nine Jews lying against the wall of a corner-house at Franciszkanska and Nalewki streets in the last throes of death from starvation,” the escaped doctor related. “At first, when a man or a woman fell on the pavements of the Warsaw ghetto from hunger, people tried to do something to help the victim, but now there are so many Jewish deaths on the street that people avert their eyes and pass by.
“Around those nine dying Jews,” the doctor continued, “a group of emaciated children were hovering, waiting for the victims to die so that they could strip the bodies of their clothes, especially the shoes.” The refugee doctor added that despite growing starvation among the Jews, their faith in the eventual victory of the Allied Nations is now stronger than a year ago. “Jews and Gentiles are now united in Poland as never before,” he asserts.
