Jewish Religious Federation is Recognized as Public Body (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
The official text. of the Presidential decree of October 14. 1927 regulating the legal status of the Jewish religious communities in the Republic of Poland was published in the “Dziennik Ustaw.” the official gazette of the Polish government.
According to the decree. which is extended to the entire area of the Polish Republic, with the exception of the districts of Posen. Pomerania and Silesia the Jewish communities in the Republic are recognized as religious bodies and the Jews in the country, with the exception of the three districts mentioned, form a Religious Federation a legal body comprised of the individual communities. The Federation is headed by a Religious Council. The Jewish communities correspond in principle to the territorial limits of the cities, towns and villages.
The jurisdiction of the community includes the following functionst
1. The organization and maintenance of the rabbinate.
2. The establishment and maintenance of synagogues. houses of worship. ritual baths and cemeteries.
3. Caring for religious education of the youth and providing the Jewish population with Kosher meat.
4. Administering the property and funds of the Jewish community, as well as all institutions and enterprises belonging to the community.
5. The community has the right to carry on welfare work in behalf of poor Jews and to establish for this purpose the necessary institutions.
6. The boards of the smaller Jewish religious communities are to consist of (a) the rabbi and (b) eight members who are elected in general, direct, secret, proportionate elections for a period of five years. The board elects from among itself its chairman. The board represents the cammunity in all legal matters and in relation to the authorities.
