The Polish Government has sent to the Allied Governments a note on the Nazi extermination of Jews in Poland, it was learned here today. “All reports agree that the total number of Jews killed by the Nazis in occupied Poland runs into many hundreds of thousands,” the note states.
It was also learned here today that the Polish Government has decided not to send Gen. Josef Haller as its diplomatic representative to the Middle East. Jews in Palestine protested against the appointment of Gen. Haller to a post which involves dealings with Palestine, emphasizing that his record might make Jewish cooperation with him difficult since there are many polish Jews in Palestine who still remember the anti-Jewish terror conducted in Poland by the troops under Haller’s command. It is understood that Gen. Haller will remain as Minister of Education in the Polish Government-in-Exile while Tadeusz Romer, former Polish ambassador to Russia, may be appointed to the Middle-East post.
The Polish Telegraphic Agency reports that the Minorities Department of the Polish Government will be separated from the Polish Ministry of Information and placed under the Ministry of the Interior. In effect, this means that the Minorities Department will absorb the Jewish Department which for some time existed in the Ministry of the Interior. The number of officials in that Department will be increased and Prof. Gorka will have under him two separate section, the Jewish and the Ukrainian.
