The Polish Government will contribute “a substantial sum” toward the erection of a monument at the site of the infamous Treblinka concentration camp, where tens of thousands of Jews perished under the Nazi regime, it was announced here today.
The announcement was made by Salo Fiszgrund, chairman of the Jewish Central Committee of Poland, and Dr. Franciznek Duszenko, a sculptor and lecturer at the Academy of Art at Gdansk (Danzig) Poland. They came here to purchase granite for the monument which, they said, will cost a total of 15,000,000 zlotys (about $180,000).
Hillel Storch, president of the Swedish section of the World Jewish Congress, announced that a committee has been formed by 15 Jewish organizations in Sweden to raise the remaining funds needed for the monument above the Polish Government’s contribution.
