Progress in the self-aid movement among Polish Jews was reported at the seventh annual convention of the Jewish cooperative societies in the Republic of Poland, which opened here Sunday night at the Nowosci Theatre.
Five hundred delegates, representing 533 cooperative banks, are attending. Ex-Senator Rosenstreich, who is presiding over the sessions, expressed the gratitude of Polish Jewry to American Jews for the aid given in the organization of the cooperative banks. The subsidy of one million dollars made available for the cooperative banks through the Joint-Ica Foundation has made it possible to develop the cooperative banks, which now have a total of $6,000,000 at their disposal.
A congratulatory message was received from Dr. Bernard Kahn on behalf of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Messages were despatched by the convention to President Moscicki and Marshal Pilsudski. Deputy Isaac Gruenbaum, who addressed the delegates in behalf of the Club of Jewish Deputies, stated that a strongly developed Jewish cooperative movement is a powerful instrument for maintaining the economic position of the Jewish population in the country.
Strife is expected to develop during the proceedings, as several groups are contending for supremacy in the administration. One hundred and twenty among the delegates are Zionists; fifty delegates come from Galicia.
