A demand for a thorough investigation of the recent incidents at Kovel where a number of Jews were injured following clashes with hooligans growing out of a swimming pool altercation was made today by the Jewish National Council of Poland in a memorandum to M. Skladowski, minister of the interior.
The memorandum quotes the “Kovel Voice” which says “that in spite of M. Filipowicz’s communique the attacking party was Christian while the Jews retaliated in self-defence. Among the Jews injured were elderly people, women and children. Naphtali Salz, Hirsch Boxer, Eliezer Beiler and Abraham Biner were badly hurt and seventeen others were slightly injured”.
On July 9 Titus Filipowicz, the Polish ambassador to the United States, replying to inquiries made regarding the Kovel incidents by the Federation of Polish Jews in America, reported that the trouble started when “two Jewish youths overturned on the Turia river a boat occupied by two Christians and the latter retaliated by tipping over the Jewish boat.” On the next day. M. Filipowicz’s investigation showed “a railroad official named Styczynski was severely injured on the head during an altercation with a Jewish passenger” and three days later “a street brawl took place in consequence of which several Jews…. and two Christians received injuries….”
