An appeal to the constitutional committee of the Polish parliament to preserve the proportional election system in the country, in order to give the Jews an opportunity to be represented in the Parliament, was made today by the Jewish deputy, Dr. Rottenstreich, at a session of the committee.
Dr. Rottenstreich emphasized that proposed changes in the constitution “will make it impossible for Jews to elect representatives to the Parliament.” Three million Jews would be made politically dumb, he pointed out.
The changes in the constitution are aimed at strengthening the position of the Pilsudski government against opposition groups. The Jewish population, though dissatisfied with the government’s anti-Jewish attitude and the system of overtaxation, is nevertheless supporting the present regime. The constitutional changes, however, would make it impossible for Jews to be represented as a national minority. Jewish deputies, if elected, would be representing the government bloc.
