An ordinance making Polish Jewish DP’s now living in the British zone of Germany eligible under the “armenrecht” (poor persons law) will be promulgated soon according to an announcement by the Jewish Committee for Belief Abroad, Jewish refugees from Poland living in the British zone have previously been denied benefits accruing under this law, since German courts maintained that Poland did not extend the same privilege to German nationals living in Poland.
The Committee reported that its legal advisor, who made representations in behalf of the displaced Jews to the German courts, argued that the principle of reciprocity should not be applied to these refugees since they had no ties to their country of origin, adding that they should be treated as Gorman nationals. Reaction to the Committee’s representations was favorable, the organization said.
